Wrong Currency at Etsy Checkout? Here's How Buyers Can Fix It

If you're a buyer seeing the wrong currency at Etsy checkout — British Pounds (£) when you expected US Dollars ($), or Euros when you expected Canadian Dollars — you're not alone, and it's frustrating. Here's what's happening and exactly how to fix it.

This Is NOT the Seller's Fault

The most important thing to understand: the seller cannot control which currency appears at your checkout. Even if the seller lists their products in USD, Etsy can display a different currency to you based on your account settings. The seller has no ability to force a specific currency on your end.

This catches many buyers off guard. They message the seller asking them to "switch to dollars," but the seller simply cannot do this for you. The fix is entirely on the buyer's side.

Why This Happens

Etsy uses your account's location and region settings to determine which currency to display. If your account region is set to United Kingdom (or another country), Etsy will display prices in that country's currency — even if you're physically located in the US and even if the sellers you're buying from are US-based.

This commonly happens when:

  • You created your account while traveling abroad
  • You used a VPN that made your IP look like it was in another country
  • You migrated an older Etsy account from another country
  • Etsy auto-detected your location incorrectly at signup

How to Fix It: Step-by-Step

Follow these steps on the Etsy website (this cannot be done in the mobile app for all settings):

  1. Click your account avatar in the top right corner of any Etsy page
  2. Select "Account settings" from the dropdown menu
  3. Click the "Preferences" tab (or scroll to find "Location Settings" — the layout varies)
  4. Find the Region setting and change it to your country (e.g., "United States")
  5. Find the Language setting and set it to your preferred language
  6. Find the Currency setting and change it to your preferred currency (e.g., "USD — US Dollar")
  7. Click "Save Settings" (or "Save Changes")
  8. Refresh your browser or clear your cache, then revisit the listing

One More Important Note About Currency and Payment

Even after changing your Etsy display currency to USD, your bank or credit card may still charge you in your local currency at the time of payment. This happens because your bank converts the USD charge to your local currency using their exchange rate — this is a bank-level conversion, not an Etsy setting.

If you're seeing unexpected charges in a foreign currency on your bank statement after updating Etsy settings, that's your bank's currency conversion at work. Contact your bank for details on their international transaction fees.

A Note for Sellers

If you're a seller who regularly gets messages from buyers confused about currency, consider adding a note to your shop announcement or FAQ section:

"All prices are listed in USD. If you're seeing a different currency at checkout, you can change your display currency in your Etsy Account Settings → Preferences → Currency. The seller cannot change this for you."

A proactive FAQ answer like this can prevent confused messages and reduce pre-purchase friction that might otherwise cost you a sale.

Still Seeing the Wrong Currency?

If you've followed all the steps above and the currency still isn't showing correctly, try:

  • Logging out and logging back in to Etsy
  • Clearing your browser cookies and cache
  • Trying a different browser or device
  • Contacting Etsy support directly through their Help Center

Currency display issues are almost always account-setting problems, not listing problems. The fix is quick once you know where to look.
