How to Price Your Etsy Products

How do I price my Etsy products?

A common Etsy pricing formula starts with your total costs (materials + labor + overhead + shipping), then adds a markup to cover Etsy fees and leave you with a profit. Because Etsy's fees are percentage-based, you cannot simply add a flat amount — you need to divide by the remaining percentage after fees. This calculator does the math for you automatically.

Total costs = materials + labor + your actual shipping cost
Fee rate = listing fee + transaction % + payment % + offsite %
Minimum price = total costs / (1 - fee rate)
Recommended price = total costs / (1 - fee rate - target margin %)

What profit margin should I aim for on Etsy?

Most Etsy sellers target a 20–40% net profit margin after all fees and costs. A 30% margin is a healthy starting point for handmade goods. Bear in mind that Etsy fees alone typically eat 10–15% of your sale price (listing + transaction + payment processing), so a price that only covers costs will leave you losing money once fees are applied.

How do I account for Etsy fees when pricing?

The key mistake new Etsy sellers make is adding fees on top of their target price rather than working backwards from it. For example, if you want $10 after a 6.5% transaction fee, you cannot charge $10.65 — you must charge $10 / (1 - 0.065) = $10.70. Stacking all fees (transaction 6.5% + payment 3% + optional offsite 15%) means roughly 25–28% of your sale price could go to Etsy. Price accordingly.

Should I offer free shipping on Etsy?

Etsy prioritizes listings that offer free shipping in US search results for US-based buyers. However, "free shipping" just means you've built your shipping cost into the item price. Since Etsy's transaction fee is applied to both item price and shipping charged to the buyer, there is no fee difference between charging separately for shipping vs. rolling it into your price. The real question is whether the higher item price (with shipping included) still appears competitive. This calculator lets you model both scenarios by adjusting the shipping fields.
